Build a complete Roman Pula walk around the Arena, Temple of Augustus, Arch of the Sergii, Twin Gate, Small Roman Theatre and ancient street pattern.

The Arena is only the beginning

Pula’s Roman heritage works best as a connected urban story. The amphitheatre sat outside the ancient city walls, while the Forum, temples, gates and theatre belonged to the civic core. Walking between them makes the ancient city easier to understand.

Temple of Augustus

The Temple of Augustus stands on the Forum and dates from the Augustan period, between approximately 2 BC and AD 14 according to Visit Pula. Its survival makes the Forum one of the most important stops after the Arena.

Arch of the Sergii and city gates

The Arch of the Sergii dates to the late first century BC and once stood by the Golden Gate. The Twin Gate and Hercules Gate preserve other fragments of the ancient approach into the city.

Small Roman Theatre

The Small Roman Theatre adds another kind of public building to the route. Together with the Arena, it helps distinguish theatrical performance spaces from the larger amphitheatre built for mass spectacle.

Frequently asked questions

Arena, Temple of Augustus, Arch of the Sergii, Twin Gate, Hercules Gate, Small Roman Theatre and surviving mosaics are among the principal remains.

Yes. The main Roman sites in central Pula are close enough to combine in a walking route.

The Arena is an obvious start if arriving from the waterfront or northern side of the centre; the Forum works equally well in the opposite direction.
